Seven boats, with crews from Manly Sailability and Manly Yacht Club, participated in the Helly Hansen Women’s Challenge Regatta. The conditions proved challenging, as the first race was held in virtually no wind, and the second race saw only a very light south-easterly breeze. Due to time constraints, the third race was abandoned.
Bruce and Pam Davis served as the race committee aboard Ready, Get Set.
John and Jim, on Charlie’s Chariot, handled the laying of the marks and shepherded the boats throughout the course. Official photographer Marg Fraser-Martin was also on Charlie’s Chariot, capturing the action as it unfolded.
In the opening race, Dolly Wallace, sailed by Anna and Lyn, rounded the top mark just ahead of Lisa and Gigi in Vin. Skye and Ros followed closely in Eli D, with Nicole and Catherine in Black Swan next. Jackie and Caroline in Helen Hendry led Lily and Issy in Ralph Newman, followed by Helene and Clare in Woody.
The second race featured a shortened course and slightly improved wind conditions, resulting in more competitive sailing. Vin crossed the finish line ahead of a tightly grouped Woody, Eli D, and Ralph Newman. The remaining finishers were Dolly Wallis, Black Swan, and Helen Hendry.
Given the difficult drifting conditions and in the spirit of fun, the race committee overlooked several rule infractions, such as starting early and touching rounding marks.
After a frustrating morning on the water, Lisa and Gigi were awarded first place overall for the regatta, followed by Lyn and Anna in second, and Skye and Ros in third. Prizes were generously provided by Helly Hansen, and the organisers expressed their gratitude for this support.
The organisers extend thanks to all competitors, Bruce and Pam, the support boat crew, and all onshore supporters, particularly Denis, Michael M, Peter, Guy, Jeremy, and Michael B. Marg Fraser-Martin is also thanked for her wonderful photos, which can be viewed on Facebook at “Marg’s Yacht Photos” https://www.facebook.com/margsyachtphotos#
The combined efforts of all our wonderful women sailors, volunteers, and supporters ensured that the regatta was a resounding success.
